2020 Isuzu D-Max: orange front angleOverview

Recalls are issued for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Manufacturers or importers seek to inform the original buyer if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. However, manufacturers or importers may not have the contact details of subsequent owners. Please note that the recalls below are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Isuzu RG D-Max

2020-21 Isuzu RG D-Max Crew Cab: rear seatbelt pretensioner

In December 2020, recall campaign S202042 was issued for 2020-21 Isuzu RG D-Max Crew Cab vehicles. In these vehicles, the rear seatbelt pretensioner locking tab may be defective such that it would not tension properly. If the pretensioner wiring harness connector locked incorrectly, it may not fully tension the seatbelt in the event of a collision – this could increase the risk of injury. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-000672.

2020-21 Isuzu RG D-Max X-Terrain: tonneau front cover may detach while driving

In July 2022, recall campaign S202209 was issued for 2020-21 Isuzu RG D-Max X-Terrain vehicles. Due to a manufacturing issue, the roller tonneau front cover screws may become loose and fall out. If this occurred, the tonneau front cover may detach from the vehicle while driving – this could increase the risk of a collision and injury to vehicle occupants, road users and/or bystanders. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005473.

2020-22 Isuzu RG D-Max: potential loss of steering

In March 2023, recall campaign S202301 was issued for 2020-22 Isuzu RG D-Max vehicles. Due to a manufacturing issue, the lower steering shaft attaching bolt may have a torque value lower than the required specification. As a result, the lower steering shaft attaching bolt may lose tension over time, causing it to dislodge. If this occurred while the vehicle was being driven, it would cause a loss of steering – this increased the risks of a collision and injury for the driver, occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005647.

2021-23 Isuzu RG D-Max: fuel hose could chafe and leak

In November 2023, recall campaign S202308 was issued for 2021-23 Isuzu RG D-Max vehicles. Due to a manufacturing issue, the fuel hose may chafe against the engine oil level bracket and become damaged. If this occurred, fuel may leak and, in the presence fo an external ignition source, could ignite and cause a vehicle fire. Such a fire posed a risk of injury to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and a risk of damage to property. To fix, an Isuzu Ute dealer was to replace the fuel hose and retaining clips. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-005842.

2020-24 Isuzu RG D-Max: ECM update to prevent engine stalling

In August 2024, recall campaign S202408 was issued for 2020-24 Isuzu RG D-Max vehicles. Due to a software issue, the Engine Control Module (ECM) may incorrectly reduce the engine’s speed. This could cause the engine to stall and the driver to experience a loss of drive, which would increase the risk of a collision and injury to both vehicle occupants and other road users. For this recall, an Isuzu Ute dealer was to inspect and update the ECM software. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-006052.

2020-23 Isuzu RG D-Max: incorrectly installed fuel hose could leak fuel

In August 2024, recall campaign S202409 was issued for 2020-23 Isuzu RG D-Max vehicles. In these vehicles, the fuel delivery hose may have been installed incorrectly and could contact the engine oil level gauge bracket. This could cause premature wear to the fuel delivery hose and a fuel leak – in the presence of an external ignition source, the fuel could ignite. A vehicle fire posed a risk of injury to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, a a risk of damage to property. For this recall, an Isuzu UTE dealer was to inspect teh fuel hose and replace it. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see REC-006053.

Review: Isuzu RC.I D-Max cab chassis (2012-17)

Overview

Released in July 2012, the Isuzu RC Series I (RC.I) D-Max cab chassis was available in single cab, dual cab and space cab bodies, the latter with reverse-opening ‘wing’ doors. Manufactured in Thailand, the RC D-Max was powered by a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine that was mated to either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The five-speed ‘Rev-Tronic’ automatic transmission had a sequential sports mode and an adaptive-learning function which monitored brake and throttle use to select the most appropriate gearshift and lock-up points.

Jointly developed with the Holden RG Colorado , the RC D-Max had independent, double wishbone front suspension. All cab chassis models were fitted with high-ride rear suspension which utilised overslung long-span semi-elliptic leaf springs. Four-wheel drive models had a ‘Terrain Command’ dial in the centre console which enabled the driver to ‘shift on the fly’ from two- to four-wheel drive at speeds of up to 100 km/h. Four-wheel drive models were fitted with steel plate guards for the sump, transfer case and fuel tank, while the low range gears had a 2.482:1 reduction ratio.

Compared to the Isuzu RA D-Max cab chassis , the RC D-Max had a 45 mm longer wheelbase (at 3095 mm) and 50 mm wider front and rear tracks; major service intervals were also extended from 10,000 km to 20,000 km. The D-Max had a braked towing capacity of 2500 kg for RWD and 3000 kg for 4WD models, while load capacity was in excess of 1000 kg for all models.

  • Responsive 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine
  • Spacious cabin
  • Seats lack support
  • Manual transmission has vague shift action
  • Competitors have quieter, better-insulated cabins
  • Cheap interior plastics

Overview

Released in October 2008, the Isuzu RA D-Max cab chassis was initially available in single and Crew cab bodies, with a Space cab following in September 2009. Manufactured by Isuzu in Thailand, the D-Max was mechanically identical to the Holden RA Rodeo that Holden replaced with the similar Colorado in 2008.

All D-Max cab chassis models were powered by a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The RA D-Max cab chassis had a ladder-type chassis and all models had torsion bar front suspension and leaf springs at the rear. The four-wheel drive system utilised an electronically-controlled transfer case which could be engaged ‘on the fly’ via a dashboard button, which also provided selection of high and low range gearing. A limited slip differential was standard on all four-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive models.

Safety equipment

Initially, the EX variant was not equipped with any airbags; dual front airbags, however, were fitted as standard from July 2009. Standard safety equipment for the SX included dual front airbags, ABS and electronic brake force distribution.

ANCAP crash testing

Results from crash tests conduced by ANCAP of the Holden RA Rodeo were applied to the Isuzu RA D-Max since they were essentially the same vehicle. In ANCAP crash testing, a 2004 Holden RA Rodeo LX rear-wheel drive single cab model – equipped with dual front airbags – received a three star adult occupant protection rating with a score of 23.51 out of 37. In the offset crash test, the Rodeo received a score of 7.51 out of 16, with poor protection from serious chest injury. As a result, a three-star rating was the maximum the Rodeo could achieve and a default score of 16 out of 16 was awarded in the side impact crash test.

Subsequently, a 2006 Holden RA Rodeo four-wheel drive crew cab – equipped with dual front airbags – received a three star adult occupant protection rating with a score of 21.4 out of 37. In the offset crash test, the Rodeo received a score of 5.4 out of 16, providing poor protection from serious chest injury. As before, a default score of 16 out of 16 was awarded in the side impact crash test.

Features

Standard features for the D-Max EX included a two speaker sound system with CD player, air conditioning, remote central locking, 12 volt power outlet and immobiliser.

The D-Max SX was further equipped with power windows, a tilt adjustable steering wheel and remote entry. The dual cab models, however, had a four speaker sound system and flat folding rear seats.

From May 2010, the Space cab models were fitted with two additional jump seats in the rear, increasing seating capacity from two to four; under each seat base there was a box with a load platform and small tool storage racks.

2011 D-Max Farm Mate

In January 2011, limited-run ‘Farm Mate’ editions were released of the single cab EX and extended cab SX variants. The Farm Mate edition was fitted with a fully galvanized steel dropside tray with chequer-plate floor, tubular headboard and stirrups, tail-light guards, rear cab window mesh guard, a tow bar kit and black steel bull bar. Inside, the Farm Mate editions also featured Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity.

2018 Isuzu D-Max Crew Cab: rear leaf spring could fracture

In April 2019, recall campaign S201910 was issued for Isuzu D-Max Crew Cab vehicles that were available for sale in Australia from 27 January 2018 to 16 October 2018. For vehicles that had three leaf rear suspension, the rear leaf spring could fracture due to the front eye being of insufficient diameter. If the rear leaf spring fractured, the parking brake cable may be unintentionally applied due to the rear axle being unsupported on the failed side – this could cause a collision. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2019/17434.

2018-20 Isuzu D-Max Crew Cab: rear leaf spring may fracture

In March 2020, recall campaign S202005 was issued for Isuzu D-Max Crew Cab vehicles that were available for sale from 27 January 2018 to 28 February 2020. In these vehicles, the rear leaf spring may fracture due to an insufficient diameter for the front eye. If one of the springs broke, the driver may not have full control of the vehicle – this increased the risk of a collision and injury to vehicle occupants and other road users. For the VINs of the recalled vehicles, please see PRA 2020/18230.

Isuzu RC D-Max: suspension squeak/noise

There have been reports of high-pitched, squeaking noises from the Isuzu RC D-Max’s suspension. While some dealers attempted to fix this by lubricating the bushes, the problem was that the angle of the shock absorber pin caused it to rub against and wear through the original bush. The pin would then contact the metalwork, causing the squeaking noise. Revised shock absorber pins and bushes were subsequently introduced and could be fitted to replace the original bushes.

Problems and faults: Isuzu RA D-Max utility

  • For the Isuzu RA D-Max utility’s turbo-diesel engine, the turbocharger may be slow to provide boost and power may be down due to the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve staying open.
  • The diesel fuel cooler is mounted low and vulnerable to damage if off-roading. For off-road use, it may be worthwhile fitting a guard or plate over the cooler.
