Review: Daewoo V100.I Leganza (1997-99)

Overview

Released in August 1997, the Daewoo V100 Series I (V100.I) Leganza was a small, front-wheel drive sedan. Manufactured in Bupyeong, South Korea, the Leganza was powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine mated to either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. The 2.0-litre ‘Family II’ petrol engine was manufactured by GM Holden and had double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and a compression ratio of 9.6:1.

Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign, the Leganza was 4671 mm long, 1779 mm wide, 1437 mm tall and had a 2670 mm long wheelbase. Furthermore, the Leganza had MacPherson strut front suspension and independent, dual-link rear suspension.

Features

Standard features included a six speaker sound system with a CD player, air conditioning, front fog lights, central locking, telescopic steering wheel adjustment, power windows and power mirrors.

Review: Daewoo V100.II Leganza (1999-02)

Overview

Released in April 1999, the V100 Series II (V100.II) Leganza was powered by GM Holden’s 2.2-litre ‘Family II’ petrol engine which was offered with a new electronically-controlled four-speed Aisin Warner automatic transmission. Other changes for the V100.II Leganza included additional safety equipment, firmer rear suspension and the omission of the SX variant name.

Safety equipment for the V100.II Leganza was improved with the introduction of a driver’s airbag.

ANCAP crash testing

In ANCAP crash testing , the V100.II Leganza received a two star adult occupant protection rating with a score of 12.1. In the frontal offset crash test, the passenger compartment was substantially deformed and the driver’s contact with the airbag was unstable. Furthermore, the front passenger struck the dashboard – with a moderate risk of life-threatening head injury – and protection from serious leg injury was poor for the driver. In the side impact test, there was a high risk of life-threatening chest injury.

Features

Compared to its V100.I predecessor, the V100.II Leganza were extended to include 15-inch ROH alloy wheels with 205/60 VR15 Bridgestone Turanza tyres and an alarm.

Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Daewoo V100 Leganza

  • In May 1999, a recall was issued for Daewoo V100 Leganza vehicles manufactured prior to 16 March 1999 and in the VIN range KLAV_69ZEWB000000 to KLAV_692EXB181193. For these vehicles, the wiring harness close to the top of the accelerator pedal may interfere with the travel of the pedal and hold the accelerator open (PRA 1999/3946).
  • In February 2003, a recall was issued for Daewoo V100 Leganza vehicles supplied in Australia from 1997 to November 2002. For these vehicles, the vehicle jacks had warning labels which do not comply with the vehicle jack safety standard AS/NZ 2693:1993 – Vehicle Jacks (PRA 2003/5957).
  • In November 2005, a recall was issued for Daewoo V100 Leganza vehicles manufactured from September 1998 to June 2002. In these vehicles, the engine camshaft sensor may malfunction and melt, generating an odour and visible smoke. Subsequently, the camshaft cover and wiring harness may also melt (PRA 2005/8163).

  • Incorrect fuel gauge readings may be due to a defective resistor card in the fuel sender.
  • The gearshift may vibrate at higher engine RPMs – this may be fixed with a counterweight.
