Overview

Released in 1995, the Rolls-Royce Mk.IV Silver Spirit was a prestige saloon. Manufactured in Crewe, England, the rear-wheel drive Mk.II Silver Spur was powered by a 6.75-litre V8 petrol engine that was mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.

Compared to its Mk.III predecessor, the Mk.IV Silver Spirit could be identified by its reshaped body-colour bumpers, body-coloured door mirrors, smaller bonnet-mounted Spirit of Ecstasy and new alloy wheels. Inside, the radio was covered by a flip-up wood panel.

V8 engine

The 6.75-litre V8 petrol engine had an aluminium-silicon alloy cylinder block, aluminium alloy cylinder heads, electronic fuel injection, two valves per cylinder and Bosch Motronic M3.3 engine management. Supplied by General Motors, the electronically-controlled four-speed 4L80E automatic transmission was used due to its high torque capacity.

Dimensions

The Silver Spirit was 5268 mm long, 1887 mm wide, 1485 mm tall and had a 3061 mm long wheelbase; kerb weight was 2430 kg.

Suspension

The Mk.IV Silver Spirit had independent front suspension with lower wishbones and independent rear suspension with semi-trailing arms and a self-levelling function. The Silver Spirit suspension also featured an Automatic Ride Control (ARC) system which used electronically-controlled dampers. The ARC system used vertical and longitudinal accelerometers to measure body movement – interpreted by a micro-processor – and automatically engaged one of three damper settings: comfort, normal or firm. Firm mode was always employed when the car was stationary.

Recalls: Rolls-Royce Mk.III Silver Spirit

Overview

Manufacturers, or importers, issue recalls for defects or faults which have the potential to cause injury. Generally, manufacturers will inform the original buyers if their vehicle is subject to a recall and of the steps required to remedy the defect or fault. Please note that the recalls below (if any) are for Australian-delivered vehicles only. Furthermore, the number of recalls should not be taken as an indication of a model’s reliability or its safety more generally.

Recalls: Rolls-Royce Mk.III Silver Spirit

  • In August 1995, a recall was issued for Rolls-Royce Mk.III Silver Spirit vehicles that were manufactured between May 1995 and July 1997. In these vehicles, an incorrectly positioned wire within the gearbox actuator could chafe against the cover, causing the transmission selector fuse to blow. If this occurred, the driver would be unable to change gears or put the vehicle in park (PRA 1995/2555).
  • In December 1995, a recall was issued for Rolls-Royce Mk.III Silver Spirit vehicles because identified batches of Castrol Hydraulic System Mineral Oil (HSMO) may affect the operation of the distribution valves within the hydraulic systems (PRA 1995/2649).

Recalls: Rolls-Royce Mk.II Silver Spirit

  • In March 1990, a recall was issued for Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit vehicles due to a rear window demister fuse which could exceed its rated capacity. If this occurred, the fuse would blow and render the main stop lamps inoperative (PRA 1990/0942).
  • In April 1990, a recall was issued for Rolls-Royce Silver Sprit vehicles that were manufactured between August 1988 and March 1990. In these vehicles, the engine oil cooler pipe may come into contact with the hydraulic brake pipe, resulting in brake failure (PRA 1990/0961).
